Boat Jobs & Local Festivals! Thursday, October 11, 2018

11 October 2018 | Port Moselle Marina, Noumea
Helen
Didn't stay up too late last night as we were both exhausted. Woke up by 6. Had breakfast and Mark said he thought we should just stay at the marina until the 15th. So, we waited for the marina to open up. The owners of this slip will be back tomorrow, so we have one extra night at the dock. Still need to figure out where we want to go for four days. Mark started with some boat projects. Mark unfurled the jib sail. Then we lowered it so the tell-tails could be attached. We didn't have to replace all of them, so we have some spares. Next job was to spray another can of waterproofing on the top of the bimini. Around 11, we walked up to the local festival around the big square in downtown Noumea. Lots of vendors with fruits and vegetables, tours, meats, jams and local flavors. We stopped for a ham sandwich at a vendor that looked like he was cooking Mongolian BBQ. Both of us sampled the ham sandwich with a bit of spicy mustard. Then we walked around. It was a sunny and hot day. We had a Carnival ship plus a P&O ship in town. Lots of tourists around town. We stopped for a coffee and water at one of the cafes, as well as shared an ice cream cup. Walked back to the boat, stopping at the boat store. Mark was hopeful in getting a spare can of waterproofing. No luck. Mark also worked on the dinghy motor. That meant dropping the dinghy in the water behind our boat. Then hoisting the motor. Once he was done, we lowered the motor and took the dinghy over to the shipping bay. On route we stopped at our marina gas dock. Mark wanted to top up the dinghy gas tank. It was quite the climb up to fill the tank. Thankfully, I didn't have to do that. Mark lowered the full tank to our dinghy using a dock line. Then we headed over to the port area. There were some sizable waves in the anchoring area. Mark thought they had mooring balls there, but we didn't find any. No boats were anchored in this bay. It may be a restricted area for boaters. It would have been a great location, plus we would have had a short dinghy ride into the marina dock. We traveled a good distance and there were lots of huge docks, with the Carnival ship at one. Once back at the boat, we hoisted the dinghy and motor into the davits. An Aussie couple from the P&O ship, came down our dock and were taking pictures by our boat. Had a lovely conversation with them. Mark had a well deserved nap out in the cockpit. I was catching up on my daily log and getting updates on Hurricane Michael. Looks like Mexico Beach got washed out. We had a spectacular sunset with deep orange and red skies. There is another festival beyond the market and marina that begins at 7 pm. We are planning to walk over and check it out. It's dark out but we can still see the orange colored skies in front of the boat. Wow! Thanks for the emails and Facebook comments. I posted several more pictures today. We will be leaving our lovely slip by noon tomorrow unless things change. One last run to the market and we will be off.

About:
We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
