Aboard Carnival Sprit

29 January 2019 | Tasman Sea
Helen/Mark
Watched the Man From Snowy River 2 last night. Got to bed just after 10 pm. Up early around 7. Had breakfast. Cleaned up the boat and got ready to head to shore. Dinghied to the marina to check in and take a shower. Cal, the owner, was there and told us to check in when we return from our cruise. They will take care of our boat while we are gone. After we showered, we headed back to the boat. Mark packed up our gadgets and we finished our packing. Mark called for a pick up via marina tender after 10:30. Pickup was around 11 by Brett, who dropped us off at the dock at Tunks Park. Mark called Uber for a ride to Circular Quay. He asked the driver if he could make a stop at an atm along the way. The driver was kind enough to find us one. Mark got us some Aussie cash to take on our cruise. It didn't take long to get to the cruise ship dock. I tipped our driver. We left our one suitcase at the check in before heading inside the terminal. Many stops and checks along the way. We finally go checked in. There was not a big crowd at all. For some reason Mark's Visa card wouldn't work, so we used mine. They scanned us and our one bag. Mark had to take off his belt. At least we got to keep our shoes on. Once on board, we headed up to Deck 9 for lunch. It was a zoo. Almost couldn't find a table. We finally found one. I got us a drink while Mark stayed with our roller bag. Enjoyed our lunch. Then walked around until 1:30 when our cabin was available. Our keys were in an envelop attached to our door. Met Sunny, who is taking care of our room in housekeeping. Then made some phone calls. Then we had to go for the mandatory life boat drill at a designated muster station. We came back to our balcony and took pictures as we departed. Love our suite, especially the wrap around balcony. We watched some tv for the first time since we left home 14 months ago! We headed to the 2nd floor dining room for the first dinner seating at 5:15. Lots of people were already seated and had started to eat. We sat with two other couples, Pam & Graham and Ross & Beth. Both were from Australia. Had a lovely conversation as we enjoyed our dinner. The waiter is making sure that my food is gluten free. All the food was delicious. Our dinner mates have both been on this ship before and knew our waiter. The wait staff were fabulous. After dinner we walked next door to casino. They have $1 chips at the roulette wheel with tables of $5 minimum. We only played for a few spins and not one of our numbers came up. So, we gave up. Headed to the room. The ship was bouncing a lot. Walking was difficult as the ship kept listing from side to side. We found a display in the lobby of the conditions. Our top wind speed was 65 MPH apparent. The ship was making 16 knots. Oh my. We were so very thankful that it wasn't Mark and I sailing in these conditions on Charabia. The doors were locked to the outside with signs that stated it was unsafe to go out. There was quite the salt spray from the wind and seas. We headed to the show room for tonight's Welcome Aboard show at 9:30. Eli is the cruise director. He talked about the ship and introduced his staff. Then they picked 4 people from the audience and entertained us with the song, Old McDonald. None of the contestants were very good but they were given some great prizes. Then the singers and dancers performed a few songs. Afterwards we walked over to the 9th floor lido area and got some drinks to take back to our cabin. Lots of people around. It was already after 11 pm when we got to our cabin. I found it very cold. I checked out on the balcony and it was still rough seas and howling winds. Lots of salt spray everywhere. Mark turned down the air conditioning. Fell asleep right away. Could feel the boat rock whenever we woke up. Thanks for all your emails and messages. We signed up for the Wifi package aboard so we can post blog entries and get emails. We have three more days at sea.

We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
