Last night we watched the 80's Rock N Roll performance in the Pharaoh's Palace. Walked around the ship. I played one of the roulette tables and my $20 became $50, so I cashed out ahead. Went up to the Lido deck to watch the late night party. Lots of people dancing plus a lip synch competition. Picked up a glass of water and headed back to our cabin. Packed up a bag full of laundry as we get free laundry on board. Then we watched some tv and headed to bed around 11:30. Slept well. Got woken up at 7 am with our cruise director, Eli, welcoming us to Napier, New Zealand. Our ship was at the dock and awaiting clearance. With the overcast skies, the groundhog did not see his shadow here. We are supposed to be in the summer season here, so they don't care about ground hogs! We decided to sleep a bit more. Then got up, dressed and headed to the Lido Deck for breakfast. I had scrambled eggs with a muffin. Mark had an omelet with some french toast. Headed back to the room to get ready to exit the boat. Mark checked the weather and there was a high percentage chance of rain between 9 and 10. It was overcast and sprinkling when we got on the free shuttle bus to head to Napier. The ship was at the port dock and we could only leave via the bus. The bus dropped us off at the town Information Center. They had restrooms there but there was a charge to use them. How sad was that for Napier! They offered several tours, but we elected to walk around town instead. The prices were really good at the shops. I bought a couple of dresses and we each got a pair of shoes. We did notice the famous art deco on most of the buildings in town. I was surprised they had so many streets full of shops and cafes. We ended up at the farmers' market with a beautiful park next door. We found some free wifi in the park and made a couple of calls. We heard a few automated songs using bells. They had the tallest palm trees I have ever seen. We walked back to the museum and toured it. The museum had free restrooms. The city of Napier had an earthquake in 1931 which destroyed all but 3 buildings. Headed back to the Information Center and took the next shuttle bus back to the ship. We got there in time for lunch. Then it started raining very hard. Lunch was Cuban sandwich for Mark. I had veggies, rice and some beef on a gluten free piece of bread. We walked back to our cabin. Our bag of laundry was already done that we left in our cabin. Thanks to our room steward, Sunny! We watched the ship depart Napier around 3 pm. There were several optimist sailboats out racing in the ocean. As we headed out to sea, there was a cold breeze plus it was raining lightly. The seas were definitely more bouncy. Mark walked with me as far as the spa/gym on the 9th floor. He returned to the cabin and took some pictures from our balcony. I got interested in a crazy funny movie and walked over 3 miles. Headed back to the room. Had time to shower, get dressed and head to our early dinner table only to find that we missed the Captains' party with snacks and free drinks. Mark was upset, but the tickets were on our table. It didn't bother me as there was nothing we could do. Graham & Pamela were kind enough to share the extra drinks they brought back. Mark didn't miss much. Ross & Beth also joined us for dinner. I had chicken satay and veggies, plus turkey and vegetables. Mark had fruit and a beef dish. We both had cherry pie for dessert with ice cream. Mine was gluten free and very tasty. One of the younger waiter staff sang an Elton John song to entertain us. Came back to our cabin after dinner and waited for the show to begin. Tonight's show was called, Sarah Jones, who was a ventriloquist. We walked out early as it was not very entertaining. Came back to the room and are watching the movie, La La Land. I remember the raves when this movie came out. Not sure I like it. Our ship is moving a lot now that we are on the open ocean. We noticed that they put a lot of barf bags at the elevators on each floor. Thanks for all your emails and messages. Great to hear from you. Someone asked if we had plans for the Superbowl game. It will be starting around noon on the day that we are touring Auckland. So, not sure we will be anywhere that we can watch it. Would love to have some warmer weather. Maybe just some sunshine. Daily highs have been 32 Celsius. Today's high was less than 20!. The rain and overcast skies made it feel cold to me. I was wearing a rain jacket over my top, but I was cold. I found a NZ sweatshirt on sale for $15. We have a car reserved tomorrow in Tauranga. It will be great to drive around this country and do some more exploring.
