Back in Sugarloaf Bay

09 February 2019 | Sugarloaf Bay
Helen
Slight rocking thru the night on our Manly Bay mooring ball. We could hear the patrons at the Manly Wharf laughing and talking as the sound carried over the water. Woke up a few times. The top of my left thigh hurt me yet again. Finally got up around 7. Mark put my tens machine to use on my thigh. I do believe it helped me. Did some stretching before I got up and got dressed. Mark was already eating breakfast. I joined him. Mark was emptying out a bucket of water from the dinghy. It was a huge amount of water from last night's thunderstorm and rains. He started using it to clean the outer hulls. The owner from Cammeray Marina, Cal, got Mark's attention from the beach. Mark took the dinghy over and picked him up. Then gave him instructions for using Open CPN software that we use for our boat travel logs. Cal took a tour on Charabia and had suggestions for another choice of brokers to consider in selling our boat. Mark took him back to shore. Mark continued his outer hull cleaning. I helped him by holding the painter line from the deck. He worked his way around to the other hull. Our boat is a lot cleaner now. Then we got ready and headed to shore. Walked the beach over to the street and then walked up one street further away from the shops. It was mostly only residential. I asked someone on the sidewalk if there was a post office near by. He said yes and pointed us in the right direction. Next, I asked an older lady and she gave me a few more directions. Lastly, another couple gave us better instructions and we followed them around to the right street. Google maps did not show us a post office. We waited in a short line and asked about shipping cost to USA. At some point we may need to ship a few things back home. Their cheapest cost could take up to 3 months, which would be okay for us. Then we walked thru the market stalls to Manly Beach. The waves were much smaller than usual. However, withing 10 minutes they were much bigger. Tried to get our free Telstra at the beach, but it wouldn't work. Used our coverage and made a few calls. Walked along the beach and back around. Stopped for a bought a bottle of water. It was a nice long walk for exercise. Walked back to the dinghy and motored back to the boat. It was almost noon. Mark decided to get into his snorkel gear and head into the water to clean our thru hulls and props. Lots of growth and we scraped the bottom not that long ago. The sun was definitely hot. It was over 80 degrees. Mark confirmed that the water was very cold getting in. There were a few clouds in the sky this morning, but lots more afternoon. I kept watch for sharks. Mark said he saw a few small jelly fish in the water. When he got out of the water, we both showered off the back steps. Cooked up some veggies for lunch. Mark had a taste. He preferred a peanut butter and jam sandwich. We were ready to head towards thru the Spit Bridge and back to Middle Harbour. We planned to pick up one of 5 mooring balls or anchor as it will be more protected there when the winds change to the SouthWest late tonight. Mark dropped the second line and then drove as I let go of the main mooring ball line. It was starting to rain. I thought Mark would need a rain jacket but the rain did not last long. We had to zig zag thru all the sailboats out racing today. All the mooring balls were taken as we motor sailed by. There were several race boats with full sails tacking close to our boat as we neared the bridge. I really thought we were going to get hit, but they turned and managed to miss us. Oh my! Who needs that kind of excitement. We had our sail furled by then, so the sailboats had the right of way. Made it in plenty of time for the 2:30 bridge opening. We sailed some more with the wind from behind and then close hauled. Headed to Sugarloaf Bay which has 4 mooring balls. All were taken by powerboats. Dropped the anchor around 3 pm in about 25-27 feet of water. We have 150 feet of chain out which includes the bridle and it held when we backed down. Started raining again just as we got anchored. We got a few huge gusts of wind and then the rain and then the wind eased. I answered some emails. Then decided to take a nap. I know that Mark was plenty tired after our walk, his snorkel and moving the boat to Sugarloaf Bay. When we got up we were surprised at how many more boats joined us in this bay. Last time we were here, there were less than a handful. We both answered the Carnival Survey which was lengthy. Then put together chicken tenders and several vegetables into our pressure pot for dinner. Once the pot boils an indicator pops up. Then we turn down the heat for 15 minutes and everything cooks very nicely. The pot was coming up to a boiil when it shut off. Mark suggested we close the hatch but it turned out to be the end of that propane tank. Mark replaced it with a full tank. Thanks for the many emails and messages received today! We truly appreciate it. Not sure when we will head to Pittwater. The wind is supposed to change direction late tonight. If so, we may head that way tomorrow. We have plenty of sunlight for the setting sun. However, there is a mountain between us and where it will set. At least it's nicer than last night's storm that apparently did some damage in Sydney!
