F1 Qualifying

16 March 2019 | Melbourne
Helen
Woke up around 7:30. Got up and had breakfast and visited with Elizabeth. Then she got ready and headed out. We took our time. A suggestion was to check out the beach close by. So, we drove there and enjoyed walking the long pier as well as the beautiful beach. We saw 6 scuba divers in the water. Lots of small sailboats were sailing on the bay. Not much wind for them. The sun was shining all day. Much hotter temperatures. Drove over to St. Kilda's and parked in our usual spot by the botanical gardens. Found a place to have lunch. Then walked over to the tram. There were signs posted that the station was closed. So, we walked to the next stop at Luna Park. We waited with several others heading to Albert Park. We were told to get off and take a bus to Gate 1. However, we talked to another passenger who suggested staying on the tram which only went as far as Gate 10. It was not too far a walk from Gate 10 to Gate 1. I also talked to a couple who were wearing Toronto Blue Jays caps. I asked if they were from Canada, but they said no, they just liked the caps. A tram finally materialized after we waited a very long time. It was a long walk over to our Section 1 seats. I think we walked about 10 miles today. Lots of people in attendance. We sat in our seats and watched today's final practice session of the Formula 1 drivers. Took lots of pictures. It was hot sitting in our seats. We both took extra clothes as the forecast usually isn't correct. We walked around. Checked out some other locations with live bands entertaining. We bought some water and then found that the Heineken booth had free water, so we added water to our bottles. It was so hot we did that twice. I stood in a short line and got autographs from 6 young drivers in one of the other series. My suggestion was to watch the qualifying from Section 10, so we would be close to the tram to head back. We found a spot where we could see the track and also a huge tv screen with all the action. It was a very exciting Q1, Q2 and Q3. Lewis Hamilton was able to earn the pole position for tomorrow's race. Once qualifying was over, we walked out of the park and got on a tram back to St. Kildas. We had to walk the last leg as the tram wasn't working today. Then we had a long walk back. We arrived at Elizabeth's just after 7 pm. We picked up Elizabeth and headed to The Bridge Hotel Restaurant for dinner. It was a beautiful location beside the water and lots of boats. The place was busy but we were able to get a table. Enjoyed our time together. Headed back to Elizabeth's after 9 pm. The breeze had picked up and it was cold. I only had a short sleeved top on and I was cold. Got my sweater out of the trunk which helped. Watching bits of movies as we create and post this blog. Thanks for your emails and messages.

We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
