I woke up early and decided to get up. Mark eventually joined me and we had cereal for breakfast. Elizabeth was up earlier than us. Had a good visit with her. Mark brought out his laptop with pictures of our house and boat. Quite the trip down memory lane. We then rushed to shower and get ready to leave. Drove to St. Kilda's Botanical Gardens and parked one street over as we couldn't find any open spots close by. Walked into St. Kildas and had lunch at the St. Moritz cafe. We both had egg sandwiches. Once done, we walked up to Luna Park and eventually a tram came and picked up the many people that were waiting. Not sure why they changed the tram schedule this weekend when there were so many people taking the tram to Albert Park for the Formula 1 race. We noticed many people dressed in green and celebrating St. Patrick's Day. I was wearing my green cap, so that worked as well. We got to Albert Park, Gate 10, around 2 pm. They were racing the final Super Car race and one car had crashed right in front of us. They had to stop the cars and get a tow truck to pick it up and take it away before they resumed the race. We walked around some different areas. Mark said that our tickets got us into a private area with access to a big screen tv as well as a view of the track. Mark noticed that there was a gap in the fenced barrier, which would have allowed us onto the track at the end of the race. We checked out a few other buildings that we hadn't seen before. Then there was a F18 airplane doing an air show over our heads. The noise from it was louder than all the race cars. As we walked over to our grandstand, we got to see 20 MG cars parade out to the race track, pick up the different drivers and then do a lap around the track. We headed to our seats. They had a live singer who sang the Australian National Anthem. Got to see the warm up lap and then the start of the race. Watched the lights go out on the starting grid as the race started. Not sure what happened to Hamilton on the start, but we felt that Bottas had the fastest car and deserved the win. The Aussie favorite was squeezed off the track and injured his car's nose cone. He made a pit stop and ended up in last place. He seemed to be doing well but his engine failed and he was out of the race. Lots of disappointed fans. We left our seats with 10 laps to go and walked back to our F1 Advantage Members Enclosure. Watched the end of the race and saw the drivers go by. Once the race was over, the fans figured out that they could fit thru the break in the fencing. First we had to get over a fence or two. Mark put one of their chairs on one side and another guy put one close to the other side. I was able to climb up and over to the second chair. Immediately, a security guy took the chair back so Mark had to scramble to get over. We got to walk on the race track as we followed the sea of fans heading to the winners' circle. It didn't take long before they arrived. They played the German National Anthem and Finland National Anthem and awarded the trophies. It was a long walk on the race track back to Gate 10 to our tram ride back to St. Kilda. At least there were plenty of trams at the end of the race. Walked back to our car and then drove to Elizabeth's by 7 pm. Enjoyed a lovely dinner. We are planning to head to bed early as we will get up early too and leave by 7 am which is when Elizabeth leaves for work. We will have an 8-hour drive along the coast, working our way back to Sydney. Thanks for your emails and messages. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Melbourne!
