Car Swap & On the Road
18 April 2019 | Wagga Wagga
Woke up around 6:30. Tried to sleep until 7 but ended up getting up. Had breakfast and showered. Then packed up our bags and checked out around 8:30. Drove to Manly Beach and stopped along the way to fuel up. Picked up our new rental car at Hertz. This time we have a gray Toyota Civic. I got to drive our rental car as far as the Budget shop. I only turned on the wipers twice, changing lanes, since they are on the side where the signals are back home. The new rental car feels much bigger than our previous Yaris. From Budget, we headed out of town. However, we had to drive a huge amount of miles to get out of Sydney. There were plenty of other cars with the same idea. The roads were grid locked with the Easter holiday crowds. This was the first time we drove by the Sydney Airport. We could see a huge airplane pass over a bridge over the hiway we were driving on. That's not a sight you see every day. We stopped at one of the rest stops along the way. There was a fruit stand with very expensive fruit. Good thing we had a packed some in our cooler bag. We had to wait in line for the toilets and they were not what I expected at a rest stop. Mark did all the driving today. It was a nice hot and sunny day, but the sky was full of pretty thick clouds. Our temperatures reached 27C. The scenery was hilly with fields of cattle, sheep and horses. We drove many miles without seeing any houses at all. Decided to eat thru some of the snacks in our car and wait until we got to Wagga Wagga for dinner. We stopped at a second rest stop. We noticed an area which we thought was a cafe. They served free coffee and tea which was part of a volunteer program. They also would have sold us some sausage sandwiches, but we decided to wait. Just before we arrived at our hotel, Mark noticed some airplanes which were part of the Royal Australian Air Force. We stopped and walked around 5 jets that were parked in the field beside their museum. Then we continued driving and we spotted a Hertz store. I told Mark that I wanted to see if they could help with a sticky spot on the floor on my side of the car. I waited and eventually it was my turn. They were very helpful. Someone worked on it but they could not get it all off. It's much better and I will just try to avoid that area. They said it was Vaseline or something like that. We didn't get to the Townhouse Hotel until 5:30. We took our bags to our room and headed out on foot. Got some great exercise walking around. Lots of shops and cafes in their downtown, including a small shopping mall. We ended up eating in a Thai restaurant where I could get lots of cooked veggies. After we finished dinner, we walked back to the hotel. Watching some tv and relaxing. We're trying to keep our driving times down. Maybe tomorrow will be a shorter distance. Thanks so much for all the emails and messages. Great to hear from you!
