Exploring Niagra

01 August 2019 | Niagara-on-the-Lake
Helen
Woke up around 7. We both slept the entire night without waking up. I got updates on my phone. Mark posted the blog late as he was too tired last night. It was after 8 before we got up. Showered and got dressed. Then joined Robert and Chris for a lovely breakfast on the porch. After breakfast was over, we visited for quite a while. Mark did some research on a few things. Then we went for a long walk around the area. We stopped and asked about reservations at the Golf Club restaurant where we will be meeting some good friends. They have an outside patio overlooking Lake Ontario. The patio didn't take reservations, so we will get there early enough to find an open table. We walked around to Main Street. The guys picked up some beer. Chris and I went into the Angel Inn. It's supposed to be a haunted place. I decided to touch part of the wall to see if there were any spirits around. I was shown a lady with shoulder length brown hair. She was sitting in a corner by the window and she told me she was keeping the place safe. Chris and I talked about joining them one night for a ghost hunt. We ended up at the local grocery store for a few things. We walked back. Everyone helped put together a feast of a lunch. Again, we enjoyed eating out on their porch. It was not very windy. The sun was shining. Such a perfect day. It was nice to rest a little after our long drive. Mark researched the Jeep registration. We are waiting on a reply to his query for getting Florida tags without driving all the way to Florida. Mark found that we were issued a ticket from the car rental company in the UK. Apparently, they have a picture of Mark in a bus lane. No other vehicles in the three lanes. The ticket was for 60 Pounds. Then the rental car company added a fee of 40 Pounds to process it. Mark is trying to appeal it, but not sure if anything he says will make a difference. We may have pulled over to take a look at the gps. We didn't know there were fines for doing that. Worked on more get-togethers during our stay in Canada. We changed clothes for our dinner get-together with Kirby and Mary. They came over around 6 and we had drinks outside on the patio. Then followed Kirby and Mary over to the NOTL Sailing Club. Their docks have been in sad shape due to the high water levels. They had a balcony on the second story. It was a great place overlooking the end of the Niagara River into Lake Ontario. We enjoyed a fabulous bbq dinner. We are so very thankful to Kirby & Mary. Since there was no hint of a breeze, the Wednesday night sailors were motoring back to the marina. Lots of activity on river with several jet skis and other power boats going in either direction.
I did comment that I have never seen the Lake waters so calm. That made for a beautiful view of the Toronto skyline. Then as the sun set, the pink color was stunning. Such an amazing view. We returned home around 9:30 since it was already dark. We made a few phone calls and called it a night. Thanks for the emails and messages on this last day of July. We are planning to be in the Niagara area for the next week.

We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
