Rice at West Point - 08/30/19

31 August 2019 | Madison, Connecticut
Helen
Slept in until 8. Showered and got dressed. Had breakfast in the cafe downstairs. Then took a short drive to the local grocery store for a couple of things. Then we headed back to our hotel. Met up with Lara and Parker. Parker took his boomerang flyer out to the front parking lot. Mark & Parker had fun chasing it around the parking lot. They decided to try out the pool. It was both inside and outside. They agreed that the outside portion had warmer water. I had packed my swimsuit but I decided to keep Lara company instead. Parker complained about his eyes burning, so we gave him some of our eye drops, which helped. Then we packed up our bags and loaded them in the back of the Jeep. Walked Lara out back to load her luggage into one of the Rice buses. Then Lara and Parker joined us in our drive to West Point. It was scheduled to take an hour. We also stopped along the way at BJ's restaurant for some lunch. We had a parking pass and headed thru the security gate where Mark had to show his id. Our parking lot was close by Michie Stadium in West Point. However, it was elevated at least 3 hills above. We climbed down two of the hills before Mark remembered that he didn't bring his camera. So, Parker and Mark got some exercise climbing back up. We were early for the game, so we walked around and tried to get down to the Hudson River. We could not find a path that went past the houses along the river, so we gave up and headed back to the stadium. Lots of West Point cadets in khakis were on the foot paths, all heading to the game. Our seats were behind one of the end zones and completely in the sun, so we walked around and then sat a couple of sections over, which gave us a clear view of the field. They didn't have a big screen to display all the action on the field, only the score board. The game was close and tied for the entire game. Lots of great plays for Rice. The stadium was filled with mostly Army fans and they made a huge amount of noise. Rice also had their share of loud fans. Their defense played very well. They had a huge opportunity to tied up the game near the end but an incomplete pass gave the game to Army. Score was 14-7. We had passes to walk out to the field, but we didn't stay very long. Both teams had already headed off the field into their locker rooms by the time we got to the Rice team bench. We did get to see Mike before we left. We were so very happy to get to watch a Rice game. We are hoping to get to Houston before the end of the season to watch another game. Mark and I headed up the three walkways to the top parking lot. There were few lights to guide us. We had to use our phone flashlights to light up the porta potty. Good thing because the traffic was grid locked. We made one stop along the way to get fuel. Our drive to Madison, Connecticut took around 2 hours, making it there by midnight. Thankfully, my sister Chris, stayed awake to let us in. We were too tired to work on the blog, so it will be posted late. Thanks for all the well wishes for today's game. We appreciated your emails and messages. Enjoy the long weekend.
