2nd Leg Port Dickson to Marina Island
03 October 2014 | Pangkor island
tropical thunderstorms
The next leg was either 50nm to Port Klang or 120nm to Marina Island. We opted for Marina island which was not such a good choice as we ended up motor sailing or motoring as there was not enough wind to sail. All was going well when I swapped shifts with Chris at midnight. It was a different scene when we changed over at 2am, raining, dark and choppy. The rain became very heavy, the lightening flashes more frequent, although no thunder, stronger winds whipped up the chop more and all on the nose. I went through 3 shirts on my shift as I kept getting soaked looking out when the lightening flashed. After an hour of that it settled down a bit and looked like the wind could hold the genoa. I should have known better that was the calm before the storm!! I made good progress going from 3 knots to 4.7 knots and was feeling quite smug until the wind kept strengthening to 25 -26 knots and shifting round on the nose!! Time to change watch and Chris to wrestle the genoa and furl it. Starboard motor conked out, port motor sprang to life at the first turn of the key thank goodness but then the auto pilot stopped working. We seemed to be getting sucked by the current into shore which wasn't helped with running the port motor as that pointed us more towards shore too. Wheel hard to port and we were tracking sideways, just couldn't get on course. Huge current and tidal push as the tide raced around the headland. With more revs pushing the port motor to the max managed to get traction in the opposite direction way off course but at least away from land and the shallows. Clawing along at 2.5 knots for the next hour I stayed up not being able to relax and sleep! Finally got past the tidal current, back on track although only managing 3.3knots I went down for some sleep. 7am change of shift, sunrise, wind eased to about 16 knots which assisted in the chop easing and the current slackening off as well but still not much headway as we were still only travelling at 3.3 knots! It was 10am before we picked up a bit on the knots 4.3 then 5.1 at 11am, with seas becoming more comfortable and wind easing further to 13knots.
As we neared the marina mid afternoon it was becoming quite squally, it was too windy for us to manoeuvre to where the marina crew had intended us to berth so we went alongside another pontoon that was easier to access, however it had a huge bolt sticking out with the wind blowing us onto the pontoon! We got lots of fenders in place but I wasn't happy with it. After some discussion and consideration we felt we had enough space from the pontoon behind that we could ease the boat back further and the bolt wouldn't be at the widest part of the boat. Once we were clear of the bolt I managed to pull the bolt out so we didn't have to constantly be worried about it, certainly not a marina to leave ones boat unattended! The marina is just anchored down and moves like a snake. This is a man made island to service a tourist island Pangkor across the channel.
We've just had confirmation that the marina we are headed for can take us (well that could change of course), when we first asked last week we were told they had nothing. Hopefully all going well we'll be up there by the end of the week.
