25 June 2008 | The "Soo"
John
We awakened to a really dense fog this morning which didn't lift until 1000. We left quickly as did our new friends aboard "Gunkholer". For all of my mental preparation, this trip turned out to be fairly anticlimactic. We saw very little traffic and never had to yield to any freighters although we did have one "chasing" us into the Soo the last hour. The channel up the river is very well marked with buoys, range lines and other aids to navigation. In some spots, the channel can be quite narrow with up to 1.75 kts of current but in other spots wide with areas to move off into to let the big ships pass. I was also surprised to have cellphone coverage most of the way. We're now safely tied up at the Kemp marina for a couple of days while we take our nephew back and pick up our son. We hope to "lock through" and enter Lake Superior on Saturday where we don't expect to have internet access for a couple of weeks.
