Loon Harbor
Last night at bedtime, a small thundershower moved through. This marks the 8th night in a row that we've had rain during the night. Both Deanna and I awakened fairly early this morning. Deanna to bake some bread and I to prepare the pancakes for the kids. Right after the bread came out of the oven, I realized that we were out of propane fuel that we use for cooking.
As near as I can tell, the nearest propane refueling possibility is in Thunder Bay, 75NM from here as the crow flies. As we learned yesterday at Rossport, this north shore of Lake Superior will teach you to be self-reliant. It is not a place for the inexperienced or unprepared. One must carry spare parts and have redundant systems. Luckily, I brought along a small 1 lbs cylinder of propane that we can use for the barbeque grill. We can heat water on it and make some basic meals until we get to Houghton, MI Friday night.
Although very secure, for all of its press we found Woodbine Harbor to be fairly ordinary as an anchorage as compared to some of the other incredibly beautiful places that we've been. We did dink around a bit in the morning and then upon departure, we struggled to get our anchor rode unwrapped from around a dead head. We ended up having to winch the dead head up to the surface and then unwrap it using the "brute strength" method. Basically, we came really close to loosing an anchor.
We left the harbor as the fog was burning off, but we were soon engulfed in the fog again as we entered into the lake. Soon we had sunshine overhead, but we continued to navigate by GPS in mile of visibility as we sailed along on a broad reach in 10kts of wind. Around 1330, Isak who was at the wheel exclaimed, "We just sailed out of the fog"! Sure enough, we could see land and the fog bank now immediately behind us and a beautiful day had emerged.
The eastern approach into Loon Harbor was fairly straightforward path between several islets and rocks and we were soon tied to shore near the published "clearing". The kids went ashore to play some frizbee and soon they were both swimming in the "warmer" 58 degree water while I cooked the wonderful beef stew on the barbeque grill that Deanna had created out of the food that we didn't have.
