Summer 2008 Lake Superior Cruise
01 August 2008 | Stockton Island
Stockton Island via Bayfield and Michigan Island
We departed Madeline Island Yacht Club at 0730 to meet Deanna's parents in Bayfield prior to their departure and then continued on to Michigan Island where we anchored on the southeast corner of the island, rowed ashore and hiked through the woods to see the two lighthouses. The Michigan Island lights are unique in the sense that there are two of them in the same location, the second large steel tower having been relocated from the Delaware River fifty years after the original lighthouse was built. We climbed both lighthouses and were surprised to find that the large tower was still an active aid to navigation and thus contained government equipment.
From Michigan, we traveled the short distance back to Presque Isle Bay, Stockton Island for the night.
