Water, water

15 February 2010 | St. Lucia

The picture above was taken in St. Anne, Martinique. Evan flies his kite with a fishing pole from the back deck.
We arrived in St. Lucia two days ago. We left Martinique will an interesting passenger - volcanic ash that landed on our deck all the way from Montserrat. When we were on the islands near Montserrat( St. Kitts & Nevis), we were very watchful of the winds and the forecast. We were hoping to avoid the ash, and we did! But once we got to Antigua, then Guadeloupe and Dominica we thought we were out of the "ash zone", never thought twice that it might reach us. Ha! How about the southern tip of Martinique. That is a long way! But there was a dome collapse on Montserrat and very odd winds out of the west that combined to send the ash our way. YUCK.

But no problem, mon. We were headed to Rodney Bay Marina in St. Lucia. Once there we were looking forward to washing the boat and filling our water tank. Hook up the hose at the dock and blast away the ash. We found out when we arrived that the water was off at the dock, but it would be on later in the day or tomorrow. But tomorrow is illusive. We sat coverd in ash for two days while we learned that St. Lucia and other islands to the south are in the midst of a drought. Water rationing is in high gear. Hmmm, never had this problem five years ago. Luckily our boat had a watermaker (desalinator) previously and we can get one installed relatively easily. Greg ordered it today. It will be in next week.
