Inverness and home

From Cromarty to Inverness, CG's winter home was only 17 miles, the wind was very light, we got 10 minutes of sailing in our last trip of the season but essentially it was a motoring day.

Off to Cromarty

Wick to Cromarty in our passage plan was 55 miles, mostly on a heading of about 220 (SSW). The wind had been south-westerly for days and we didn't fancy a 55 mile beat so we delayed and watched the weather like hawks. Eventually a day of Westerlies, not too strong was forecast so we went for it. We [...]

Castle of May

Dunrobin Castle and Castle May are both well worth the visit if you are ever up that way. The latter has been kept just as HM The Queen Mother left it the last time she visited in 2001. The lady that introduced us to the castle had been working there since she was a child, she was probably in her 70s. [...]

Bye Bye Orkney

It's time to leave Orkney and head south back to mainland Scotland on our way to our winter base in Inverness. Landfall on the mainland will be Wick. Much thought and head scratching has gone in to this trip: timing, distance, tides and mostly the sodding weather. Perm all these. From where we are [...]

Washing the outboard

From Calf sound a 2 hour trip on the motor to Whitehall in Papa Sound on the northern end of Stronsay. It was mostly upwind and we couldn't be bothered to tack all the way. Two nights on a visitors buoy and a look around the village.

Ann and Steve Crome | cloudy
Again we are squeezing in trips before impending bad weather. Monday 7th, our day for a circuit of Skellig Michael, the planet of Ahch-To where Luke Skywalker was hiding in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi (I had to google that, I didn't know!!). There were at least 15 tripper boats operating our of Portmagee where we were anchored and they operate out of other harbours as well. There were 10 buzzing around when we got to the island and heaved-to for lunch. We couldn't go ashore to see the beehive huts because there is nowhere to anchor. From there we continued to Derrynane in increasingly foul weather. We arrived in pouring rain and anchored.

From Derrynane the plan was to overnight in Kilmakillogie, towards the top of the Kenmare River,. But having had a 3 hour motor to get there we decided that to beat the strong winds coming in from Friday (11th) we needed to get around to Bantry Bay and in to the safety of Lawrence Cove Marina on Bere Island opposit Castletownbere by Thursday. So we lunched in Kilmakillogie and then got in a decent afternoon sail in SUNSHINE (yippee!) down to Garanish Bay, right at the end of the peninsular, ready to go around the end the next morning.

Photo shows Skellig Michael with a ghostly Force-induced cloud on top to hide Luke from the empires agents searching for him.
