Hard on the Wallet

Well, interesting times in Dunvegan on Skye. We dinghied into Dunvegan Castle pontoon to go and se the castle and gardens. The castle is interesting, a lot of history of the MacLeod clan; the oldest continuously occupied castle in Scotland. The gardens are brilliant, more different species of plant [...]

It's so bloody cold!

I was right, we did have to hide in Lochboisdale. Arrived on Monday 3rd, first chance to escape without getting blown to bits was Sunday 9th. So we hired a car for 3 days and toured South Uist, Benbecula, Eriskay and Barra by car.

Don't you just love the British weather

Just a quick note to post a photo taken of the same view from the same spot a few minutes ago.

Dodging the storms, but a bit of unexpected sailing!

Kerrera marina to Tobermoray we expected to have to motor with the forecast being little wind on the nose up the Sound of Mull. Turned out to be a lot of wind on the nose which meant beating all the way was an option. We decided to beat until we got fed up and then motor, so ended up tacking back and [...]

Here we go again

Hi all. Sorry not to have posted for so long. We're off on our trip from Troon via the Outer Hebrides and the Orkneys to finish in Inverness in September. We may go to Shetland if the weather gods are kind. We plan to get to Stornaway at the top of the Outer Hebrides on Lewis Island by early July and [...]

So, we made it all the way around Ireland at last. We've only been trying to do this since 2020.

Rain, rain go away

Wednesday 23rd, off from Kinsale to Youghal (pron Ya'll as in the southern drawl 'how ya'll doin?', I see where they got it from). The log book reads rain, dry, drizzle, rain, rain, drizzle. Seven soggy hours later we found our way through the limited visibility into Youghal harbour and another mooring mayhem. Trying to lift the pick up buoy of a visitors mooring, the buoy was stuck and the boat hook was dragged out of Steve's hand and overboard. Bizarrely, it was not floating flat on the sea but in an upright position. Who knows why, but it made it easier to retrieve. We now have a bent boat hook. Youghal is a very pretty place with medieval walls and houses to gaze at. Decent live music in the pub as well.

Two days later we set off for Ballycourtney anchorage in the Dungarvan estuary. Sunshine!!. A very pleasant sail/motor in light winds behind the beam. We decided to pick up a day and keep going to the next day's target, Dunmore East. 7.5 hours, a lot of motoring but a good days progress.

Just one night there then off to where we are now, Kilmore Quay. Only 4 hours but an excellent sail in moderate winds behind the beam. We're here until Friday or Saturday next week, hiring a car and going inland to Kilkenny, supposedly the prettiest inland town in Ireland. We'll see.

Photo shows Hook Head lighthouse, on the eastern side of the Waterford harbour estuary passed on our trip from Dunmore East to Kilmore Quay.
