This morning we've been doing a zigzag pattern across a site, near our current position, to survey the bottom. For the initial test of Nereus the engineers are looking for a fairly flat level bottom between 500 and 1000 meters depth. The image is from the Echosounder. The echosounder sends out a ping that bounces off of the bottom and is collected by a transducer on the hull of the ship. The time it takes for the ping to travel this distance is calculated to measure the depth. The red coloring is the contour of the sea floor. The image shows a seamount that goes from about 1250 meters on the left side of the screen to about 900 meters with a peak at 850 meters. The depth at the time the image was taken was 1326 meters. Grand Cayman Island is visible about 13 miles in the distance. Weather: Partly cloudy, 84 degrees, winds from the East at 7 knots, seas 2 feet.
