No Wind Yesterday, Plenty of Wind Today

05 August 2006 | Timor Sea
Chris
Yesterday we made about 94 miles which is less than our typical daily distances. We actually drifted for a couple of hours because there was no wind. Normally we would motor during when this happens but we need to conserve our diesel as there are many miles to go before we can refuel. The rest of the day we ghosted along under spinnaker. The weather was nice and the seas flat so it was actually pretty nice.

Today the wind filled in from the south east. Currently it is gusting gale force. We have one reef in the main and no headsail. We are running dead down wind and on course. The seas have us rolling beam to beam which is a little uncomfortable but not too bad. Otherwise the weather is nice, another sunny cloudless day.

Hopefully the fish will be biting today. There is a shoal (Van Cloon Shoal) about 45 miles ahead. The sea floor rises from 300 feet to 47 feet. We will pass over it in the late afternoon, when the bite is good, provided the seas are not to outrageous or it could be dangerous. Fish are supposed to be plenty around open water shoals like this one.
