Shipwreck

18 September 2006 | Ile Fouquet
Julie
Yesterday we went snorkeling around a wrecked yacht just about 200 metres off the shore of Ile Fouquet. Apparently the boat was anchored a ways out when a squall caused them to drag anchor in the middle of the night. They were not able to stop themselves in time and wound up on a coral head with two huge holes in their hull. The wreckage is only a few meters below surface, so it's easy to see while snorkeling. It's fairly well in-tact, with the pushpit and pullpit clearly visible. Ironically you can just make out the hailing port of the vessel - Newport, Rhode Island, just across the bay from where Cisnecito is registered, in Jamestown. We've seen plenty of large shipwrecks along the way, but something about seeing this makes it hit much closer to home.
