A Slight Detour
03 November 2006 | Mozambique Channel, Indian Ocean
Chris
We had another great day of sailing. There was not a cloud in the sky and we have had 15 to 25 knots from behind and have been making good time down the Mozambique coast. Early in the morning we took the big kite down as the wind kicked up over 20 knots. This afternoon we finally found the Mozambique current and our speed over ground has been 10 to 11 kts for the last several hours.
Unfortunately all this good weather is going to come to and end by Monday morning. Very strong southerlies are expected to come up the Mozambique channel and we have been advised to seek shelter in Mozambique. Fred on Peri Peri Net has been keeping us informed of the conditions and suggested that we make landfall at Bazaruto, Mozambique and anchor behind the island for a couple of days to wait out the southerlies. We are currently a couple of hundred miles away from Bazaruto but have altered course and kept our speed up to ensure we make it before Sunday evening.
The upside is that all of the boats we are cruising with are also headed to Bazaruto to see shelter and we hope to make the best of this unplanned stop.
The picture above is of the whales we saw noted on yesterday's update.
