Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Park

23 November 2006 | Richard's Bay, SA
Julie
We rented a car and drove up to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Park with Ingve and Frode. We left at 4am so we could be there when the gates opened at 5. Within about thirty minutes we had seen more animals than I had expected to see the entire day. Throughout the day we saw giraffes, white rhinos, black rhinos, elephants, impalas, warthogs, hyenas, zebras, baboons, and more. We drove around the parks all day which covered about 100 square kilometers, stopping to get out at lookouts and for a quick lunch. In the afternoon we came upon a dead buffalo in a stream being eaten by three crocodiles which was quite a sight. Late in the day the animals all seemed to get together to socialize. We had to stop more than once for a herd of zebras or impalas just hanging out in the road.

The park is world renowned for initiating a Game Capture that ultimately saved the white rhino. Although there were not many of them in the park, we were lucky to see quite a few. We would liked to have stayed longer because we weren't able to see even half of the park and there is also a great lodge to stay in, but we plan to visit some more parks during our stay here.
