Buggy Ride on the Beach

We hired a buggy for the morning and our driver, Aurelio, took us up to a nearby river that looked like we may be able to anchor in. Blasting American music apparently in our honor, we sped down the beach past some local fishing camps, men on horseback, and of course, a few of other buggies. We arrived to the river at low tide and the pass was uncovered, but were told by one of the men there that at high tide there is about 4 meters of water throughout the channel and we would have no problem getting in.
There was a small town there and one other boat, a French catamaran, anchored a bit further up the river. There were also about five small wood boats on the shore of the river which we couldn't figure out what they were for, as they didn't look like fishing boats. All of a sudden a Land Cruiser filled with tourists en route from Jeri to Tatajuba arrived and drove right onto one of the boats and four local guys proceeded to propel them across to the other side of the river, using long sticks to essentially walk them along the bottom. It seems that this is the main thoroughfare between Jeri and some of the larger cities and they heavily rely on this form of car ferry to make it through.
At the end of the day, we couldn't get a clear understanding of the depths in the river at low and high tides, so decided against trying to navigate up it, but enjoyed our buggy ride and chatting with the locals nonetheless.
