On the 4th race, the committee had the "full-on" racing fleet (see Volvo 70 ABN AMRO One in the background) passing through the performance cruising fleet which promised to be exciting and potentially a little frightening. Here I am just trying to keep the boat going straight, Luke (our tactician) is praying, Emma focuses intensely on flying the spinnaker and Nadine watches over the main.
We met Emma and Luke on their boat Eagle Wing in Chagos, British Indian Ocean Territory. They are both seriously good sailors and despite being from the U.K,. fantastic cooks. Luke's Bananas Foster and homemade yogurt has reached legendary status and his yogurt (the Indian Ocean recipe) is often the subject of lengthy debate on SSB radio. "It is just perfectly sour and creamy" is the usual exclamation upon tasting it. Emma's culinary expertise is not to be overshadowed by Luke's. Once in Mozambique, Africa, needing tortillas but having never actually seen or eaten before, Emma managed to re-create a few dozen perfect handmade tortillas, and not the sub par kind you would buy in grocery store. As I ate them, I would close my eyes and see old Mexican women kneeling before a flat stone and hot iron griddle kneading balls of dough in to authentic tortillas in the heart of Mexico.
When Luke and Emma are invited to a dinner party they will offer to bring "pudding" which means something sweet and good for desert. So remember to save room for the treats.
