Running from a Low
18 July 2005 | En route to Tonga
Julie
Out of Rarotonga the winds were fluky but we managed to fly a spinnaker for much of the sail. We caught two huge mahi-mahis and a large whale followed in our wake for about an hour one afternoon. As we were neared Tonga, a low pressure system was approaching and we were racing to make landfall before it hit. The last 24 hours were a bit hairy??"huge wind and seas, and any moonlight was covered by clouds. We arrived to Tonga in the middle of the night, so we ducked into the North Shore anchorage and found ourselves in a peaceful bay with beautiful moonlight and good holding. We had a much-needed good night of sleep after seven long days at sea.
