Anchored in the Harbor

02 December 2007 | Mazatlan
Chris
We made it to Mazatlan yesterday afternoon. We ended up sailing in to the harbor and anchoring under sail after a big scare with our engine. We had found about a quart of oil in the pan below the engine. We fixed the leak but I did not want to start the engine until we had extra oil on hand.

After borrowing a quart from the boat next to us. We set up the dinghy and went ashore. We took a local bus to the old town. It is very charming with narrow streets with quaint old buildings and picturesque squares. On a Saturday night it is quite lively with lots of hip looking young locals and a few gringos.

We walked around for about an hour and then popped in to a locals only bar. It was a real dive with fairly unsavory looking clientele but beer was cheap and it was entertaining. After a beer we decided to look for some place to eat that would be more appealing.

We walked around the Plazuela Machado again looking for somewhere fun to eat but it was starting to look pretty touristy. A group of local girls approached us. They wanted to speak English with us for a school project. It was very entertaining. Andrew is picture above with our new friends.

Later we headed to the Centro Mercado for some cheap eats. There was a little hole in the wall taqueria which we ate really good 80 cent tacos. After that we headed back to the boat as we were both pretty tired.
