Moving to St. Maarten
27 January 2013 | Virgin Gorda, BVI

2012 was dedicated to learning the BVI's and USVI's. 2013 is going to be our year in what is called the Renaissance Islands (St. Maarten, St. Barths and Anguilla). But, getting there always is a problem. The islands lie due East of Tortola. With the east winds, east seas and generally blowing conditions, the crossing is not one that excites very many people.
To make the crossing, we were joined by our good friends, the Hoffmans. I don't know what John and Sue were thinking....GOOD FRIENDS I GUESS! That said, as a crossing of 70 plus miles, it takes an overnight trip.
To prepare, you see Joanne and Sue donning their West Marine best. Equipped with all the trinkets like a whistle, Kannad AIS Transponder, Knife, crotch strap, etc., they are reading themselves for a night out on Comocean. This plus the appropriate Fire, MOB, Abandon Ship and Collision training, plus seasickness pills for Joanne, and we are ready for the excitement to begin. AND, it began quickly as Seth spotted a near perfect weather window. We met our friends on Escapade (Shaun and Neill Sullivan) and left a 4:00 PM for the Journey East.
