Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is one of 8 of the Spanish Canary volcanic islands. Most mid ocean islands are volcanic but I expected Lanzarote to be more like the Hawaiian islands or French Polynesian heavily vegetated volcanic islands. Lanzarote is about 30 miles long and 10 wide. There is very little vegetation, several now quiet caldera’s and lots of aged lava dominating the pretty stark landscape. But the island is a charming place due to the relaxed, positive attitude of the people, island architecture, surprisingly good and reasonably priced restaurants, fascinating and artistically enhanced volcanic sites. Somehow people have learned to grow grape vines and vegetables in fields of crushed lava. The climate is mild. It is a very enjoyable place to spend some time. RR
