We waited at Hospital Point until the weather calmed down and it was safe to go. That was at 7:30 pm Sunday night. We had a 14 hour window between episodes of high winds. We used 11 of those hours.

Hospital Point, VA

We traveled only about 12 miles from Great Bridge to Hospital Point. We are 0.2 miles from the termination of the Atlantic ICW. We have traveled 1019 miles on the ICW south and 1019 north, plus extensive travels in the Bahamas.

We had a nice trip up the Currituck Sound and stopped at the free dock in Chesapeake, VA. The dock is next to the bridge and lock at Great Bridge. It is an excellent lace to get off the boat and walk in the park.

We took off as the sun was setting. The traffic in the Norfolk area was light. So was the wind. We motored all night. The seas for lighter and the wind died as predicted.
We arrived home at 6:32 am. Now we unpack the boat and get some sleep.

We stopped here for the day because the weather is bad until sundown. We will not head up the bay in rough weather. The weather will turn for the much better and we expect to be home tomorrow.

The photo is a large boat hard aground at Hospital Point. I am not sure how long it has been there.

Another long day, over 12 hours from Dowry Creek, up the Pungo River, the Pungo River -Alligator River Canal, Alligator River and across the Albemarle Sound.

Although the prediction was 10-12 kts wind and 1 foot seas on the Albemarle, we experienced 15+ wind and 4 foot seas. It was extremely choppy and tiresome as it came in the last 3 hours of a long day.

We are now in a calm anchorage north of the Albemarle. The next two days will be much shorter and hopefully easier.

We left Beaufort at first light and motorsailed our way north. The day started calm and we fought the current up Adams Creek to the Neuse River. We passed Oriental, and kept on truckin'. The wind picked up a bit as we reached the mouth of the river. By the time we exited Goose Creek and entered the Pamlico River it was blowing 15-20 kts. That pushed us toward the Pungo River and up to Dowry Creek.

We landed at the Dowry Creek Marina with the wind at our stern. We had excellent help from the dockhands, so it looked like we knew what we were doing. We knew the winds would be up to 40 kts tonight, so we had 7 docklines and 4 large fenders out.

We had an excellent soft shell crab dinner on the boat. The marina had prime soft shells in their freezer and we took advantage of the treat. Then we watched a movie and settled in for the blow. It peaked between midnight and 2 am, but we slept through most of it. The boat rode the wind and waves well. By morning the wind shifted to SW and we were very well protected.

We do not expect the weather to break until Friday. Our current plan is to Move early Friday and cross the Albemarle Sound. Then on to Norfolk, VA and then home.
