Now that's a weed wacker
15 September 2016
Once we were on the way we got,to,watch the weed removal process above lock three. The machine looked like a floating combine with blades like a hay mower under the water and a conveyor system to lift the cut weeds out of the water. When full, he would go to shore and dump onto another elevator that would feed a dump truck. They had already removed three truck loads from the area in front of the lock gates before we arrived and there was lots more to go. We finally made it through followed by a quick pump out and water stop in Mechanicville. The rest of the trip was without incident arriving at Waterford twenty four hours later than planned. The girls went shopping while Allan and I held down the fort. Bev took a bit of scenic tour of town and enjoyed the sights. Waterford is where the Erie Canal joins the Hudson and there were lots of south bound boats tied up along the wall. The Troy lock tender confirmed there are hundreds of boats, largely Canadian heading for warmer climes.
