How the other half lives
21 September 2016
Our run of good weather finally ran out on Sunday and we awoke to cloudy skies and light showers. Larry and Beth were up early to pack for their trip home and at 8:30 we headed ashore in the dinghy to meet their taxi. Bev and I were planning on visiting the Vanderbilt mansion so after a relaxing morning we motored 5 miles to Hyde Park Landing where we hooked on to one of their moorings for the day; this was quite a challenge in 1.5 knots of tidal current.. Unfortunately, it rained most of the day so we delayed our mansion visit until Monday.
The next morning the weather was somewhat better so we took the dinghy ashore around noon and went for a good walk followed by a mansion tour. The estate is part of the National Parks Service and they do a great job of maintaining the grounds and structures in their original glory. Our guide was very interesting with a good sense of humour resulting in an enjoyable tour.
Once the tide eased we cast off the mooring and motored 10 miles to Clinton NY where we found a nice quite anchorage well off the river channel. This would set us up for our run Tuesday to Croton on Hudson.
