Salt Monument

29 January 2017
We have spent the last two days anchored off Monument Beach; although it is a long dinghy ride across the harbour it is a great spot for swimming and hiking. The winds have been very calm so we have slept well at night and enjoyed relaxing days on the beaches. However, there are always minors repairs or chores to do on board to keep things running smoothly. Last night I discovered the burner on our BBQ is starting to rust away from all the salt water spray so I dinghied ashore in search of a new one. I tested my old hitch-hiking skills and set off on my mission. The locals are great at giving rides, however after visiting numerous stores I struck out. Hopefully with a few repairs it will last until I can find a new one.

Larry arrived Saturday evening and will be here for the week so we plan on heading, with another boat, to Long Island on Monday for a few days. This is our first visitor from home since we left in September so we had a little catching up to do; Bev called it an early night but we sat up until after 11:00.

Today's picture is of the Salt Monument on Monument Beach; these were built by locals to let passing ships know that there was salt available for purchase to preserve their food stocks. The locals created salt ponds so they could harvest salt and trade it with the passing ships.
