Long Island Bahamas not NY
30 January 2017
The plan for Monday was to head to Long Island for a couple of days. Our destination was Thompson Bay which is 35 miles south east of Georgetown and the forecast was for a great sailing day. The calm winds of the last few days came to an abrupt end around 3:30 am. as the cold front rolled through with 25 knot winds from the north. After an hour or so of checking that no one's anchor was dragging and all was secure I went back to bed and tried to sleep. We all got up a bit groggy from a lumpy night but were prepared to leave with 4 other boats by 9 am. It truly was a great sail as it remained overcast for most of the day so we beam reached between numerous reefs and cays all the way in 15-25 knots of wind. We expect to spend a few days exploring the island before heading back to Georgetown so that Larry can catch his flight to the frozen north.
As dog lovers we always take note of the amount of people who travel with their dogs and the amount of time they dedicate to their well being. Obviously, some are more spoiled then others as their four legged friends need a lot of attention on a boat. We have spent the last couple of days anchored beside a boat that has an interesting set up. At first glance I thought they had a unique solar panel that was 3 feet wide and 8 feet high adjusted by a pulley system. However, it finally dawned on me that it is a ramp that they lower down so their dog can walk to and from the dinghy; they are true dog lovers! Today's photo is of the dog going up the ramp; it's not the best quality but zoom in and you can see the red life jacket as the dog returns to the boat after his morning run.
