Nova Scotia Bound at Last
02 July 2023

We have been trying to get to Nova Scotia since 2020 but thanks to Covid travel restrictions and other unforeseen delays we haven't been able to get there. However, this year the stars have aligned and we're finally on our way. Currently we're anchored near the top of Chesapeake Bay in the Bohemian River, just a few miles south of the C&D canal entrance. The plan from here is to ride the tide through the canal and down Delaware Bay tomorrow to Lewes, if we hit it right we'll be in before dark. The next leg will be to Cuttyhunk MA., a distance of around 260 miles at the entrance to Buzzards Bay. We hope to rendezvous with our friends on Whitebird there before carrying on to Nova Scotia. Once we get to Nova Scotia our itinerary is very vague however, we do hope to get to Newfoundland for a few weeks before the season ends.
In the meantime let me explain what has happened since we left Dagny at the end of April. Once we arrived home and had a couple of days to rest and work on our summer plans we decided it would be best if I went back to the boat for a few days at the end of May. The main reason we chose Herrington Harbour as a storage yard was the availability of all the various trades. Besides having a mechanic do some minor preventative maintenance on the engine we had also hired a technician to install a second chartplotter and integrate it with our older equipment. We wanted to be sure all this work would be completed by the late June so as not to delay our departure. So with a trunk full of tools my friend Chris and I drove 10 hours to prepare Dagny for our trip and check the progress of the workers. We were happy to find that most of the work was completed and the balance would be finished well ahead of our departure.
Bev and I left home on June 24th for the return trip to Dagny with our launch scheduled for the 26th, however we had to delay for a day. We had hired a détailler to touch up Dagny's waterline which has taken a beating from mooring balls on previous trips. Due to weather delays he was behind schedule which delayed us a day. Finally, Tuesday morning was launch time and Dagny was back where she belongs. The next delay was caused by a faulty wind transducer at the mast head. The electronics guys had done a good job but couldn't check the masthead until the boat was in the water. As it turns out we needed to order a new transducer which was delayed a day due to a fire in the UPS depot. We were itching to get going before the holiday weekend and fortunately it arrived at noon on Friday, once installed we were good to go. However, a long line of strong thunderstorms kept us pinned to the dock until Saturday morning. I spent a nervous Friday afternoon/evening, not watching thunderstorms but watching Osprey land on our neighbours masthead wind vanes while they scanned the harbour for food. Fortunately they left us alone and we were off early Saturday morning enroute to Annapolis.
We had hoped to spend a couple of days visiting our friends on Sandbox but had to cut our visit short. Luckily Lana had taken us shopping earlier in the week while we were waiting for parts. So with Dagny stocked and ready to go all that was left was a goodbye dinner with friends and a few competitive games of marbles.
Today's picture was taken this morning of Dagny anchored in Backcreek. Thanks Lana.
