Shelburne, Nova Scotia
09 August 2016
Our transit on Tuesday to Shelburne was by motor due to lack of winds, but the skies were clear and the sun was shining, so we weren't about to complain.
Upon arrival in Shelburne we stopped at the fuel dock and took on diesel and water and then proceeded to a mooring ball. There is limited dock space for larger boats and apparently it is booked days/weeks in advance. So it was a mooring ball for us again. Compared to being at a dock, it takes a bit more effort and coordination to do tasks like laundry and shopping because you have to go in by dinghy. On the other hand it is much quieter at the mooring and I think you get a little more air, which is much needed here these days with the humidity. Today the humidex is 30 and tomorrow it will be 33...
Shelburne is a lovely, historic town. It has connections to the United Empire Loyalists and has done a lot recently to restore the waterfront. In 1993 the Scarlet Letter was filmed here.
Our 30th wedding anniversary was the day we arrived - Tuesday, August 9th. Andy surprised me with a lovely Celtic filigree necklace - that took some advance planning..... We were told there was a lovely, sublime restaurant in town called Charlotte's Lane Café. Unfortunately they are so popular that we could not get a table on Tuesday, but managed to get one on Wednesday night. It truly was an unexpected gem.
For the next couple of days we will be doing boat jobs and housekeeping tasks while we wait for my niece Kim to arrive on Saturday. And it looks like we have a good weather window to head off on Sunday for our crossing of the Gulf of Maine. We are heading directly for Cape Cod which will mean two nights at sea.
