Armed guards at the dinghy dock

06 September 2012 | Santa Cruz, CA
Julie, Sunny, mid 60's
We spent the day doing tourist things in Santa Cruz, CA. Unfortunately, the amuzement park at the beach is closed except for weekends this time of year. We could walk through but there weren't any rides going. We walked out on the boardwalk and got some lunch.

We are in the marina but we could have anchored near the boardwalk. It was a bit bumpy when we came in yesterday so we elected to rent a spot at the dock. I'm glad that we did because the dinghy dock at the boardwalk was full of armed guards! Guards of a sealion variety, armed with teeth! Can you imagine leaving your dinghy here? It's bad enough when they spend the night sleeping in your dinghy but when a couple of dozen of them take up the whole dinghy dock, that's another thing!

We enjoyed an exhibit on the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary and watched some beach volleyball before heading back through the amusement park to get home.

Santa Cruz has a nice feel to it. We've enjoyed our stay. Santa Cruz harbor suffered damage during the tsunami last year so their space is limited to transient boats while they are under reconstruction. For those of you coming down this year, expect the possibility of rafting and long walks to the restroom/showers but the place is worth a stop anyway.
