a lump of kelp

Normally when we see kelp it's just floating flat on the surface of the sea. Today we saw a large area of kelp but instead of it being flat, it kind of bulged up a little. After a few minutes of watching this bulging mound of kelp a huge pectoral fin lifted up into the air. Whale! It kind of rolled around on the surface for a while then it's huge fluke raised up in the air and the whale dove, leaving a flat bunch of kelp on the surface.
It just got dark and we are still rolling around uncomfortably in Smugglers Cove on Santa Cruz Island.
I keep forgetting to put this in my blog. I get a lot of posts on the blog but am not usually in a good spot for answering or commenting on them. Sailblogs isn't like FB where you just write and hit enter. I want to let everyone know that even if I don't answer them, I do receive, read and ENJOY them all. Keep them coming!
