Spent the day with the crocs
28 December 2012 | La Manzanilla
Julie, what a beautiful day
This morning Ken and I along with 6 other cruisers collectively hired a panga driver to ferry us over to the small town of La Manzanilla. It turned out to be a great trip.
The government has created a park for the local crocodiles. They are mostly fenced off from the public (but we found where the fence ends), and for about 80 cents US you can walk on the boardwalk and view them up close in the swamp. Some of these guys were HUGE! We understand that they feed them fish scraps everyday so even though they can get around the fence, they don’t. They had a little pool with several 5 month old crocs that Ken really liked.
The town of La Manzanilla is really nice. Touristy but not in the mega resort touristy style. The tourists were 90% Mexican on their winter holiday at the beach. Lots of Grandpa’s playing in the sand with their grandchildren.
We bought fresh, hot tortillas, lots of fruit and vegis, a few needed items at the hardware store and even found a pet store that had some treats for the cats. We had the best meal that we have had in Mexico. Just simple chicken burritos at a street taco vendor but boy were they yummy. Seek out Pedros when visiting La Manzanillo.
I think the highlight of Kens days was when an iguana fell out of a tree, bounced of the roof of a car, hit the trunk, landed on his feet on the ground, stood still (probably stunned) for a few seconds then took off running for the crocodile enclosure where he bounced off the chain link fenced, TWICE, then finally made it through. Does he not know that iguanas are a favorite food of crocodiles? It just wasn’t his day.
