Santa Rosalia
20 July 2013 | Santa Rosalia, Baja Sur, Mexico
hot, sunny
Santa Rosalia is a nice little town with that is unlike any other that I've found in Mexico. It is not a tourist town. There is no sandy beach, no shops with tourist crap, no car rentals. Instead there are excellent restaurants, happy residents and things to do and see.
There is a large copper mine here. It was originally opening in the 1800's and then closed in 1985. They are in the process of opening it again and expect to be mining in about 6 months. The there are a couple of museums and the town has put some of the old mining artifacts on display about town.
The local church was designed by Eiffel (Eiffel Towel). They are in the process of restoring the local library and are using original details to do so. It's nice that they are doing that because the architectural style in this town gives it it's own flavor and sets it apart from all others.
We plan to be here for about another week and a half. The docks are almost full and we have been enjoying spending time with other cruisers going out for dinner and ice cream.
We broke down and bought an air conditioner. I fought it and fought it but finally gave in when we found a small one at a decent price. We slept very well last night.
