lunch adventure
09 March 2014 | El Salvador
We enjoyed another great day yesterday. Jan (the local English teacher) invited us to join her for lunch. 8 of us piled in our dinghies and followed her up the estuary. We looked like ducklings following mama. We passed a small fishing village and then it was pure mangrove jungle for miles. The destination was so far up the estuary, in fact, that we were all a little worried about running out of gas!
We arrived at a palapa on log stilts where the owner eagerly greeted us and helped us out of the dinghies and up the log ramp to his palapa.
What a treat this place is. It’s no more than a platform with a thatch roof but its location makes it fabulous. There are no other structures in site, just huge mangroves, birds, butterflies and 4 eyed fish. Yup, the fish from The Simpsons is real! Two eyes looking up, two looking down. And no, there isn’t a nuclear power plant nearby.
We helped ourselves to a beverage and chose our lunch from a pile of fish in a cooler. Lunch was served promptly and yummy noises could be heard all around the table.
We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying our surroundings and good conversation with friends.
