Country #7, Costa Rica

12 June 2014 | Playas del Coco, Costa Rica
It has been a while since I've posted. We were without internet access for a few weeks.

We left El Salvador on the 26th of May. The bar crossing was uneventful and we has a short passage of around 80 miles to the Bay of Fonseca where we anchored off Isla Meanguera for two days while we waited for some high winds to die down. I wish we had waited for just one more day because although the winds were down, the seas weren't and it made for a rough couple of days of passage off the Nicaraquan coast. Try sleeping on an air mattress while your friend walks around on it and you get the idea of what that passage was like. Now have your friend jump in the air mattress while you are trying to make your way to the bathroom. Ugh.

We arrived in the bay of Santa Elena mid afternoon. The bay is almost fully enclosed and it was so calm! The bay is surrounded by park where we hiked on trails, snorkeled, swam and toured the estuaries by dinghy. Each morning we were awakened by hundreds of Amazon parrots chattering away. We couldn't get close to them but we think they were large Yellow Naped Amazons.

We spent a week and a half in the bay then decided that we had better check in to the country so we moved another 40 miles to Playas del Coco where there is a small town with Port Captain, Immigration and Customs offices. The offices are not together and the check in process took a whole day but if was free.
