Wet and Drizzly first day out
12 January 2015 | Daytona Beach
Awoke to a still and foggy morning. As the fog burned off Susannah captured this shot of an heron just a few feet from our dock.
After a boat cleanup and returning the rental car we got underway around 11:30--late for snowbird cruisers, but in time to join the procession of 4 other sailboats who left St Augustine this morning. With no wind the fog moved in and out--at times very limited visibility. Just as I took the late afternoon watch a storm moved in and the wind clocked around to the north at 25 knots dumping buckets of water. Conditions deteriorated rapidly and it was quite miserable.
As we entered Daytona Beach there is a gauntlet of bridges, 2 of them bascule lift bridges. The final bridge stops opening at 16:45 due to rush hour traffic. I called ahead to the bridge operator and gave him our ETA of 16:40. I knew he had a few boats in the queue and he graciously waited for us before opening so he could squeeze all of us through. Miss this bridge and we would have had to wait until 18:00 (after dark) to get through!
Due to the miserable weather and the desire to dry out we jumped into Halifax Harbor Marina just after the bridge for a dock and plugged into shore power. Our dehumidifier earned it's keep this evening as we warmed up the cabin and enjoyed another Suz cooked marine cuisine dinners.
