Fishing While Watching Whales
05 August 2013 | Sandborn Canal
Deb/Sunny!!
We departed Tracey Arm Cove and headed for an uncharted cove called Sandborn Canal. Calm winds and fog until around 1PM when the sun broke out along with the whales. We decided to fish so we could have some bait for shrimping when we arrived. Within just a short time, we caught a nice sized silver. Just as we were reeling him in, we realized we were in the midst of 3-4 humpback whales. We tried to record all the activity at once on video. We looked like Abbott and Costello! John had that silver filleted in no time at all so that we could drop the shrimp pot at the entrance to the cove. Somewhere along the way, we realized that our fuel was running low - a complete miscalculation when we failed to incorporate the full week of repowering the boat while at anchor. For the first time John transferred diesel from the jerry can to the boat - using Jim's (of course) method of siphoning from the can to the boat by blowing into a rag held around the mouth of the jerry can. I was worried that John may ingest that ugly stuff, but he survived. We reluctantly interrupted Margot and Wally as they "caught up" from their long absence to retrieve their additional jerry can. Wally was quite a sight decked out in his "Blue Moon" bathrobe and his "say no more" expression. We were grateful that we could now heat water for showers and dishes.
