Swimming Moose

06 August 2013 | Sandborn Canal
Deb/Sunny!!
Original plan was to head into Petersburg for a long awaited re-provisioning, re-fueling, laundry, etc. stop. Since we had garnered enough fuel, we decided to stay the day in Sandborn Canal - The books say that this place should be protected as there are more bear and MOOSE here than anywhere in Southeast Alaska. John picked up the shrimp pot in the AM to find 15 huge spotted prawns - a far cry from the last 87 pot, but we had a hard time managing the current and kept getting swept out too far. Second attempt zero and third attempt zero. But….. 6 dungeness, 3 keepers and best of all - a moose swimming across the head of the canal. We got just a peep shot on the camera and by the time we made it up close enough to get a really great shot, the camera battery died!!! Anyway, not everyday do you see a moose swimming, but this was one of those rare days! We just enjoyed the show - head and antlers moving across the 1000 foot canal, he then lumbered onto the beach, shook himself off and sauntered into the woods. Then, just as we thought we had seen it all, Ruby Slippers announced that an orca/killer whale had followed them into the canal. We were able to watch him dive right off our stern for around 15 minutes and then it seemed like he just took off. In the evening, as we went to retrieve the last shrimp pot, we turned the engine off and enjoyed a beautiful sunset, humpback whales spouting across the bay, salmon jumping constantly, birds singing melodiously, but otherwise drop dead silence. Not a speck of wind. Does it sound like we are tending to exaggerate? It feels surreal to us but it actually is real. Just like God had planned it…..
