SAMOS
30 July 2013
A break in the wind meant that we were able to make it north to Samos, a semitropical island lying just off the Turkish coast. Our destination was Pythagorio on the southeast coast, birthplace of the great mathematician Pythagoras. Hiring a car for the day was a great way to see the island with its lush, high interior that Chris thought was almost jungle-like. After a visit to a waterfall, we headed to the mountain village of Manolates for a late lunch at the villages once communal laundry that is now a restaurant - Despina. The original water trough and fountain still remain and are now a feature of this wonderful family run place.
It is now the end of July and Samos is full on holiday-makers but it is still a nice place to be. However, we are ready for some peace and quiet after a busy couple of weeks and we are now consulting the pilot book to find a place that is sheltered from the meltemi wind and offers a good anchorage with swimming, even though the sea temperature is still a chilly 22 degrees C!
