First visitor of the year
06 June 2009
During our trip along the south coast of Italy, we had a visitor for a while. Do you know what it is?
This little bird landed on the mast spreader first of all but kept getting blown off so he perched onto the rear guard rails where his little claws could get a good grip. His plumage was so colourful; turquoise, yellow and golden brown. After assuring himself that we weren't going to capture him, he just sat with us and closed his eyes. He was obviously on passage himself and needed a rest.
If you haven't already guessed, it is a European Bee Eater, apparently the 'quintessential mediterranean bird' according to a book though this is the first, and hopefully not the last, time that we have seen one and had one join us onboard.
