14 December 2011 | Landfall in St. Lucia
We had a very successful Atlantic Crossing. We arrived last Thursday, Dec 7 after 18 days of wind sun and ocean. Most boats arrived safely and unharmed despite blown sails and lost propellers.
Our voyage was perfect: no broken equipment or bad weather. Most days we sailed downwind with our spinnaker, coasting and gliding over the massive Atlantic swell, reading and thinking, playing cards and eating.
It is an awfully long way, and we all had our moments of feeling daunted by the magnitude of our undertaking. Five days later, it all feels a bit like a distant dream, though we know it has changed us, deeply.
Our crew was wonderful and our captain fearless.
The Caribbean is a nice place to land--warm faces and sun. Sleep is in order for a few weeks before we are back to Vermont. We leave the ARC today for Martinique and we are ready for some quiet.
