Nuuk to Maniitsoq

05 September 2017 | West Coast of Greenland
Janice : glorious clear day, sunshine
We left Nuuk on Monday after a very pleasant week and headed North to Maniitsoq. We got some light wind sailing until our course turned us head to wind and then we had to motor once more, but it was good to be sailing again. We split the journey of 98nm by stopping overnight at Fiskefjord. The following morning we set off again under sail and were lucky to see a whale logging on the surface and blowing. We were pretty much on a collision course with it, so we changed course slightly to bring us in front of the whale about 5m away. It was big, bigger than Destiny. We had almost passed it when it realised we were there, then it lifted its big head out of the water, blew from its left side and then dived, a big body gracefully sliding away into the depths, its large blunt tail the last we saw of it. It was our first Sperm Whale. Fantastic :-) From its size we believe it was a male. Their blow is distinctive because the blow hole is off to the left of their head and the way it raised its head out of the water, we were given a good view of it. The last 2 days have been glorious weather and early evening we arrived in Maniitsoq harbour.

The harbour itself is busy and small but we managed to anchor tucked up in a corner of the entrance, with a stern line ashore to stop us turning. Tomorrow we go into town and see the harbour master and visit the town as this is where we will be for the skiing season. The surrounding mountains are looking good. We will be spending the next week or so exploring the fjords for anchorages and ski lines.
