Island Time

22 December 2017 | Honolulu
JANICE
Today Bud's cousin Wayne took us on a tour of the island in his truck. Bud and Wayne have not seen each other for 40+ years so it is good to see them catching up. Wayne used to build houses so it was interesting to learn about the housing areas and the cost of property. Honolulu is expensive. In town apartments are $1+million. As we headed round to the NE side the houses became more run down but surprisingly they were still $5-600,000+ for almost shanty type buildings. Apparently people don't do them up as they would never be able to afford them. It is the actual plot of land that is expensive no matter what derelict is on it. However the view of the island was very interesting because of this and other insights and also the fascinating lava landscape with lush tropical vegetation. Climbing would certainly be challenging here for the walk-ins, the jungle bashing and then the actual rock itself is steep with a tendency for water run-off. There are still military bases here. We visited lovely beaches but the weather was windy with small but rough breakers into the sea, so even Bubba, the dog, haltered from chasing into it for his thrown toy.
