On passage to Upernavik

31 December 1969 | West Greenland
Andy
Yesterday we spent hunkered up hiding from a gale in a small bay on Disko Island, early this morning we departed ironically with no wind but with beautiful sunshine which we have had all day. The team are bonding well, I have been teaching them all the systems on Destiny in case myself and Janice are not aboard when they may have to take charge. This is our first passage of operating watches we will be at sea for around 30 hours, so we are on 3 hour watches overnight with 3 shifts so each shift get 6 hours sleep, quite a luxury! Then in the rest of the day we can catch up with another nap as required. I am on watch alone from midnight until 3am, taking over from Claire & Andy. As I came up on watch we were passing this fantastic iceberg with the midnight sun just above the horizon, later it dipped into the sea, it being several weeks now past mid summer, but it is still daylight, no need for lights just yet. So a new fantastic day ahead and around mid afternoon we will ar rive in Upernavik our last Greenlandic stop to fuel and provision. PICTURE: Midnight, the sun just above the horizon behind an iceberg
