Teddy Bears Picnic

14 August 2018 | Croker Bay
Andy
Correction for our last post: The walrus was not a new born, close examination of our photos showed a cut tail fin on the calf that was causing the blood on the floe, walrus calves are normally born by June.

What a day we had for bears yesterday! We had been scanning the shore line all the way down Croker Bay and had seen nothing apart from a million pieces of ice or pale rocks that looked like bears but finally Janice spied two at once. The first was a very ragged thin Bear who looked up forlornly at us as we motored towards the shore. He was laid down 100m inland on the grass and slowly got to his feet, and in comically slow motion loped away. It was a very thin animal, we could see all its bones beneath its shaggy coat.

The second bear a few hundred metres further on was in fine condition, heavy and fit looking it gave us a few hard stares and again walked off but at a much more purposeful gait. We then looked up the hill to see another creamy white patch, which turned out through binoculars, to be a mother and cub bear laid in the meager grass. They were very laid back being further from the shore, the mother was facing us but only once lifted her head.

We then went on to the glacier front to get some photos of ice bergs before heading to a small bay to anchor for the night. We also saw several flocks of Snow geese with gosling's and 4 Arctic Hares still in their white winter coat that made seeing them very easy.

We only travelled 38 nm but it seemed like a long hard day standing outside in the cold looking for wildlife. The scenery here is fantastic. We are in a long fjord about 2nm wide; fog is obscuring the west shore, rough stone makes up the steep hills with old river courses cutting through them. There is virtually no colour, it is just stone, cloud and glacier clouded water with old snow patches and ice. What thin grass there is is brown and only grows on the banks just above the shore line.
